  • The police on Monday flag marched in violence-ravaged Kaladhungi and Haldwani in Nainital district and raided Chakluva, Kota Bagh, Devipur and Kaladhungi villages to prevent further violence.

The killing of BJP leader Balwant Singh Kaniyal allegedly by BSP activist Neeraj Tewari had stoked widespread violence, and madness, in the area on Sunday. A vengeful mob stoned to death Head Constable Puran Lal Sharma and threw his body into the burning Kaladhungi Police Station. Several vehicles were also torched.

The police have registered four cases and named 17 people as responsible for the violence, but have not made any arrests yet, ADGP (Law and Order) Satyavrat Bansal said. Clearing the confusion over the suspension of policemen at Kaladhungi Police Station, Bansal said only the Station Officer (SO) was suspended and not all policemen, as was reported earlier,” he said.
