In a daring daylight robbery,two motorcycle-borne men decamped with Rs 6 lakh at gunpoint from near the new Grain market on Sirhind Road on Saturday.
Sources said two men followed the son and employee of a commission agent (munshi),who had withdrawn money from a bank and were going towards Sirhind Road on their separate vehicles.
The robbers blocked the duos way and snatched the cash from the munshi at gunpoint.
Police said though the commission agents son,identified as Sandeep,ran away from the spot,the munshi,Lakhbir Singh,resisted the robbery and was shot at twice by the men.
Sources said Singh sustained two bullet injuries,in the stomach and arm,and his condition was reported to be serious but out of danger. He is undergoing treatment at a private hospital. Eyewitnesses said the driver of the motorcycle was a turbaned man. The police have registered a case of robbery and are investigating the matter. Senior Superintendent of Police Arpit Shukla said a manhunt has been launched and three police teams have been formed to nab the culprits. We are making all our efforts to nab the accused soon.
Terming the incident as unfortunate,former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh said it was a failure of the law and order machinery in the state led by Parkash Singh Badal.
