Four-year-old Tasneem Jafri became the fifth victim to succumb to dengue in the city on Sunday, five days after her father Tariq (32) died of the disease at a city hospital. Her mother Shakeela, who showed milder symptoms of dengue, was discharged later in the morning from civic-run Nair hospital.
"The child's condition was serious throughout and she was under observation. She died due to multiple organ failure. Shakeela was fit to be discharged from the hospital," said a senior doctor at Nair hospital.
Tasneem was admitted on Wednesday along with her parents, residents of Malwani in Malad. They had been undergoing treatment for dengue for over a week.
Tariq, a financial accountant, his wife Shakeela and daughter Tasneem were diagnosed with dengue two weeks ago.
Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection causing a severe flu-like illness and, sometimes causing a potentially lethal complication called severe dengue. The incidence of dengue has increased 30-fold over the last 50 years, according to WHO records.
All three were initially admitted and undergoing treatment at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital (KDAH). After Tariq's death, the mother and daughter were shifted to Nair hospital, where Tasneem's condition remained critical. She was kept on life support at the paediatric ICU.
"Tasneem's condition was critical and her organs were already showing signs dysfunction, especially her liver," said Dr Ram Narain, medical director of KDAH.
Meanwhile, the couple's two sons, aged six and two, are currently with their aunt.
