Three masked men on a motorcycle opened unprovoked fire at a police picket in Hyderabad’s old city this evening, killing a Constable. Soon afterwards, rumours — which proved unfounded — of a terrorist attack swept through other parts of the city, triggering panic.

Police sources said they suspected the banned SIMI in the attack, timed to create panic ahead of the third anniversary of the Mecca Masjid bombing on May 18. A constable of the Andhra Pradesh Home Guards had been killed in a similar attack around the same time last year.

Friday’s attack took place at Khilawat, close to Volga Café in the Shah Ali Banda neighbourhood,in the Hussaini Alam police station area. Constables at the picket returned fire, but the assailants escaped, said Hyderabad Police Commissioner A K Khan. The dead policeman has been identified as Constable Ramesh Kumar from Chittoor district, belonging to the 11th Batallion of the AP State Police.

Last year, two men belonging to the unknown Tehrik-e-galba-Islam outfit had fired at a police picket in the Falaknama basti area, killing Home Guard K Balaswamy, and leaving Constable T Rajendra seriously injured. The men,who came on a bike and fired from a pistol, left leaflets saying the attack was to avenge those who were arrested after the Mecca Masjid blast of May 18,2007.

Earlier,in December 2008,Syed Vikaruddin Ahmed,a former member of SIMI and an activist of the Dargah Jehad-o-Shahadat (DJS),had fired on two policemen who had gone to arrest him at Santhoshnagar.
