Taking note of the filthy and unsanitary conditions giving an open invitation to the spread of viral and other seasonal diseases across the city, Deputy Commissioner Prabhjot Singh Mand has taken upon himself the task of cleaning the city.
Following the ‘failure’ of the Mohali Municipal Council (MC) in keeping the city clean, Mand on Wednesday launched an eight-day special cleanliness drive in the district.
For this purpose, Mohali has been divided into four zones and a supervisor has been deputed to look after the progress of the drive in each zone.
As many as 200 safai karamcharis (cleanliness workers) have been deputed for the drive and 50 workers would work daily from 8 am to noon and 2 pm to 5 pm in each zone for two days during the drive.
The drive began from Phase VI, 3-A, IX and V falling under Zone I, II, III and IV, respectively.
The warring factions of the MC also came together at the launch of the drive.
Local MLA Balbir Sidhu and MC president Rajinder Singh Rana from the ruling group in the MC, opposition leader MC senior vice-president Harman Preet Singh Prince and area councilors Rajinder Prasad Sharma took up the brooms to formally kickstart the drive in Phase VI.
As per the schedule, the drive would continue in the same area tomorrow while it would be extended to Phase I, 3B1, X and Sector 70 on Friday and Saturday; Mohali village, Shahimajra village, Phase 3B2, XI and Sector 71 on Monday and Tuesday; Madanpura village, Phase II, VII, Sector 48-C and Mataur village on Wednesday and Thursday.
