DC visits flood prone areas

Asks officers to remain at their stations for the next two months

Deputy Commissioner Rahul Tiwari after visiting various flood prone areas asked the officers of various departments to remain available and on call for the next two months. He stated that the officers should not leave their station without his permission.

Recalling his past year's experience, Tiwari said, "Last year, August 12 experienced heavy rainfall day which created havoc in the city. I had tried contacting the officers, but the calls were not getting through as a number of the officers were stuck in other cities."

The DC has warned of strict disciplinary action against officers who leave their station without prior information. "Theses officers are the ones who have to channelise the flood systems," he added.

Tiwari visited 14 weak sites along the Sutlej, on Thursday, accompanied by officers from drainage, canal, public works system, forest and other departments.

The DC ordered the Sub divisional magistrates (SDMs) of Samrala, Jagraon, SDM East and West to be extra alert as the sites in their areas are more vulnerable. "They need to put two officers on vigil while all the SDMs need to make arrangement for boats, ropes, life jackets and life guards. The mobile numbers of village sarpanches should also be in their list," he said.

P S Ghuman, Joint commissioner of the MC has been made the nodal officer to provide machinery at bundh sites in case of flood like situation.

DC Tiwari also asked Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ashish Chaudhary, to depute eight ACPs to deal with heavy rainfall situations while ADC (Development Rishipal Singh has been asked to tie up with the Army.

The DC today visited sites: Kherabet, seed farm-1 and 2, Sherewala,Manewala, Hujra, and Madhepura along with the team.
