DCB arrests 5 with illicit liquor worth Rs 1.70 lakh

    The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) on Sunday arrested five people in separate cases for carrying illicit liquor worth Rs 1.70 lakh in the city. On a tip-off, the DCB arrested a member of the Latif gang and his two aides from the Narol Circle for allegedly carrying 178 bottles of foreign liquor in a car. Liquor worth Rs 54,000 and a Wagon R car worth Rs 3 lakh was seized from the three.

    The liquor was stored in the back of the car. Cell phones of the accused and other valuables worth Rs 4,400 were also seized, the police said.

    The accused have been identified as Naruismail Sheikh from Kalupur, Mohd Rafiq alias Kalu Sheikh from Juhapura and Mehmood Sheikh from Juhapura.

    Naruismail Shiekh was previously arrested in the Radhika Gymkhana murder case and was held under PASA in 2001 in connection with the illicit liquor trade. Mehmood Sheikh has served his term in the Sabarmati Central Jail for a murder case. The DCB said they will get one week remand of the three accused.

    In a separate case, the DCB arrested two persons near the Iskon Circle for carrying 498 bottles of liquor worth Rs 1.17 lakh in their car. The two have been identified as Poonam Dantani and Goga Parmar from Shahibaug. ‘The DCB have booked them under the Prohibition Act and have taken them on remand for three days.
