The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) of Vadodara on Friday rearrested the five Mumbai residents who were caught with 714 duplicate debit and credit cards on Thursday.
The five were arrested by Special Operation Group (SOG) of city police under Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) Section 41 (1) (d), which gives police power to make arrests without a warrant or an order of a magistrate. They have been identified as Nitin Egale, Mazahar Ali Saiyad, Satish Manga, Muhammed Mohsin Salmanu and Suraj Dantani, all residents of Mumbai.
The SOG had picked them up at 1 pm from near Amitnagar Circle in the city and seized 167 fake debit and credit cards of nationals of European and American countries. The police had also seized 547 blank debit cards, an electronic card system printer, a laptop, mobile phones a few other valuables and the car in which they were driving. The gang had prepared fake cards by using data accessed through hacking by two other persons, whom police have declared wanted.
Though SOG had handed the five to DCB on Thursday night, the DCB sleuths only arrested them on Friday as their custody under CrPC expired.
"We have got the custody of the five and will produce them in court on Saturday," DCB police inspector Jatin Prajapati said. Prajapati heads DCB's cyber cell which is investigating the case.
The gang had entered Gujarat a few days ago to do shopping from malls in the state by using the fake debit and credit cards of 18 national and international banks.
Incidentally, DCB is also investigating a case of an alleged fraud committed by misusing debit cards to pay bills in city hotels and restaurants.
