The Delhi Cabinets decision to convert the Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) into a deemed university has not gone down well with faculty members, who are planning to stage a protest against the decision.
According to the faulty, giving DCE a deemed university status will take away the reputation of the college that has so far been awarding degrees affiliated to the Delhi University. They also feel that renaming DCE as Delhi Technical University will push it into oblivion.
M P S Mahendro, president of DCE Teachers Association, said that if the college is turned into a deemed university, the biggest loss would be that of the students. Earlier students got a degree from DU. With the latest development, their degrees will not be recognised anywhere, he says.
DCE at present is under the state government though it is affiliated to DU.
Last year,in a memorandum, the DCE teachers association had asked that instead of being regulated by the Delhi government, the college should be handed over entirely to DU for smoother functioning.
Under the Delhi government, vacancies were not filled and promotions were not given, Rajeev Kumar, secretary of the Delhi Teachers Forum, which is supporting the faculty of DCE,said.
The DCE teachers association now wants to protest the Cabinet decision. The decision by the Cabinet was taken without consulting any of the faculty members of DCE. We will definitely organise a movement later. Currently, the summer vacations are on at the college, Mahendro said.
On Thursday, the Cabinet had given its nod for the proposal, which will soon be introduced in the Legislative Assembly. A deemed university status is expected to give the college autonomy, permission for expansion and more institutions to be opened under its umbrella.
