Two months after the deadline, June 1, set by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) to operate EMU rakes between Virar and Dahanu Road, there is no sign any such trains on the route.
For operating EMU rakes on this route, distance between the tracks should be widened up to 4.72 metre. Currently, DMU rakes are running on Virar-Dahanu route.
“At different places, between Virar and Dahanu Road, work on widening of track is yet to be carried out. It will take one and a half month to complete the work. At present, Western Railway’s Mumbai division has not given permission to start the work due to monsoon,” said Prakash Rao, chief public relation officer, MRVC.
But sources at Western Railway have a different view.
“There is no track available between Churchgate and Virar to operate additional trains. Frequency between two trains is already three minutes,” they said.
“Existing DMU trains (Diesel Multiple Unit) can be replaced by EMU rakes. As EMU rakes are faster, some more trains can be operated,” said Rao.
According to sources, installation of signalling system, electrical work etc are also pending on Virar-Dahanu Road route.
