As the lone player from Chandigarh to have survived in the singles category,Deepinder Singh Bains made it to the finals of both the singles and doubles category to set his eyes on a grand double during the men’s event in the HTA-AITA Men’s and Women’s Tournament played at Jassowal on Thursday.
Bains reached the singles final after beating Vishwesh Sinha 6-1,6-1. He will face Gurinder Singh who got the better of Prosonjit Paul of Jharkhand,the eighth seed,6-4,6-4. In the doubles category,he paired with Manav Dhawan to beat the duo of Digvijay Mehta and Suraj Beniwal 6-2,6-4.
Meanwhile,in the women’s singles category,fourth seed Natasha Palha ousted top seed Shweta C. Rana 7-5,2-6,7-6(7-5). The second finalist is Sharmada Balu who defeated second seed Nupur Kaul 6-3,6-3. The women’s doubles crown was clinched by Rimpledeep Kaur and Shweta C. Rana as they beat the duo of Rajbir Kaur and Gundeep Kaur 6-1,6-4.
Rimpledeep and Shweta were in superb form as they played their heart out to record a convincing win against their opponents.

City badminton coach to train foreign players
Surinder Mahajan,badminton coach,has bagged assignment as coach for imparting training to top ranked badminton players in the European countries (Austria,Czech Republic and Switzerland) for a period of three weeks. Earlier,Mahajan was to get the assignment for two months but due to other important events to be held in Chandigarh,he could not adjust his dates beyond July 29. As a result he accepted the assignment for just three weeks. The assignment was a result of his credentials for possessing a remarkable talent as a coach. Chandigarh Badminton Association members has congratulated Mahajan for the feat.
Harpreet as judge/referee for international event
Harpreet Singh of Audit General Punjab (A&E) has been appointed international judge/referee for the 14th Asian Roller Skating Championship to be held at Taiwan from July 16 to 25. Meanwhile,Sarabjit Singh Mangat has been appointed assistant coach of the Indian roller hockey team that will participate in the Asian Championship. Three players from Chandigarh- Bhavdeep Singh (Quads),Vipin Kumar (Inline) and Gulrajan Singh (Inline) have been selected to represent the Indian team in quads/inline roller hockey team.
