Defeated candidate commits suicide
GUWAHATI: An Independent panchayat candidate allegedly hanged himself on Friday after losing an election in Assam's Kamrup (Rural) district, police sources said. Mintu Das contested from 114 Ganmou village panchayat in Sualkuchi and lost the elections, the results for which were announced on Thursday night.
Ex-Cong minister beaten up
TEZPUR: Former Congress minister Ripun Bora was on Friday injured when a rival party supporter hit him at a panchayat poll vote counting centre in Gohpur in Lower Assam's Sonitpur district, official sources said. As Bora was congratulating his victorious party candidate the son of a losing candidate hit him causing injury on his forehead, they said.
Akbaruddin Owaisi granted bail
MIM legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi, who faces "hate" speech cases at Nirmal in Adilabad district and also in Nizamabad district of Andhra Pradesh, was granted bail Friday by different courts. The court of the First Additional Sessions Judge in Adilabad granted conditional bail to Akbaruddin and told him not enter Nirmal town, participate in public meetings or incite communal feelings. The court asked him to surrender his passport till further orders and was asked to submit two sureties of Rs 25,000 each. Earlier, the First Additional District Magistrate court in Nizamabad allowed Owaisi's bail plea on condition that he cooperate with the investigation officer. He was also asked to produce two sureties of Rs 10,000 each.
