Returning to one of her favourite courses,Gauri Monga, the defending champion, once again put on a spirited performance and gave a shot at successfully defending her title by taking a slender lead on the first day of the 17th Punjab Open Ladies Amateur Golf Championship at the Chandigarh Golf Club on Tuesday.
Gauri returned a card of 2 over 74 to sit confortably at the top of the table with Gurbani Singh just a shot adrift at 75. Giving them a close chase were Gursimar Badwal and Ankita Tiwana, lying joint third at 7 over 79. Gauri had a roller-coaster round making bogey on the second but she made up for it with a birdie on the third. However,a double bogey on the seventh costed her two over at the turn. The back nine was steadier with bogeys on the 12th and 15th being levelled by birdies on the 14th and the 17th.
Meanwhile,in the silver division, local junior Meher Dhillon was leading the field with a card of 16 over 88. Close behind her was the duo of Shivali Aggarwal and Bela Phadke with identical scores of 89. Chetna Arjun was leading in the bronze division with Dalbir Sahi giving her close competition.
Vrinda Aggarwal, the youngest participant, hit the ball closest to the pin, while Sukhneer Saini fired the solitary Eagle on the fifth hole. The closest-to-the-pin were claimed by Gurbani Singh in the Gold division,Seerat Grewal in the Silver division and Vrinda Aggarwal in the Bronze division.
