The Iranian government approved a plan on Sunday to build 10 new uranium enrichment facilities, a dramatic expansion in defiance of UN demands it halt the programme.

The decision comes only two days after the UN nuclear watchdog agency censured Iran, demanding it immediately stop building a newly revealed enrichment facility near the holy city of Qom and freeze all uranium enrichment activities.

The rebuke infuriated Iran, with lawmakers threatening to consider pulling the country out of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in retaliation.

The enrichment announcement is likely to stoke already high tensions between Iran and the West over its controversial nuclear activities. The US and its allies have hinted of new UN sanctions if Tehran remains defiant.

A Cabinet meeting headed by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ordered the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran to begin building five uranium enrichment sites that have already been studied and propose five other locations for future construction within two months, the state news agency IRNA reported.

The new sites are to be on the same scale of Iran’s only other industrial-scale enrichment plant currently in operation, near the town of Natanz in central Iran. About 8,600 centrifuges have been set up in Natanz, but only about 4,000 are actively enriching uranium, according to the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The facility will eventually house 54,000 centrifuges.

In Vienna, spokeswoman Gillian Tudor said IAEA would have no comment on Tehran’s announcement.

The newly revealed enrichment site, known as Fordo, is a smaller scale site that will house 3,000 centrifuges. Its discovery earlier this year brought accusations that Iran was developing the site secretly, a claim Tehran denies.

No justification ChanakyaBy: Naim Naqvi | 01-Dec-2009 Reply | Forward ..While its population is screaming under hopeless conditions, the govt wants to challenge super powers ? India wants oil but not so desperately, so don't black mail with that option...From where did you get these jewels of Information Mr. Chanakya ? Did you ever visit Tehran, Zahidan, Quom and Mashad ? Really know these names ? Are you aware of per capita income of Iranian? Are you aware of their standard of life ? Did you ever see a picture of a destitute sleeping on Iranian foot path ? Don't comment without knowing the facts. Since the death of Mrs. Indra Gandhi, the RSS lobby in Congress has grown tremendously. Sonia, being an Italian still has to develop the Nehruvian sensitivities. Congress, under Mr. Manmohan is playing the doubles games with Iran and Burma. No wonder it is supporting West and Israel against the sensitivities of Indian Muslims in the name of national interests ? The same game in Burma. Its real-politick and country will pay for Congress double-cross one day.
Defiant Iran approves 10 new enrichment sitesBy: Naim Naqvi | 30-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward @ Kotwal."..Islam in the world and supporting Islamic terrorist groups anywhere..." In the blind love of Israel, which's inspired by RSS (just because Israel is fighting with Muslims)paranoid people can concoct any opinion. Hezbollah is the only organization which sends chill in the spine of Israel. They have already punctured the myth of Israel's invincibility. They have shown Israel its true worth. To put it politely, Israel is rouge state which had never respected the world opinion. It is a cruel occupier of Palestinian lands. Coming back to India-Iran relationship, would you like to know that Iran is the most important oil and gas supplier to India. Iran, and its on record, has always supported India's nuclear ambitions. Iran had never supported the world community when then imposed sanctions upon India. Iran is India's friend. Iran is LONE challenger of U.S. hegemony & one of the most important country in the world. Under U.S. pressure India can't ignore Iran. So be fair !
No justification !By: chanakya | 30-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Israel presence is not the reason for Iran's nuclear programme. It is sort of diversionary trick by Iran to pacify its population from real issues. Every under developed country is doing same trick and Iran is no exception. While its population is screaming under hopeless conditions, the govt wants to challenge super powers ? India wants oil but not so desperately, so don't black mail with that option. Iran supported India but never came openly against terrorism and specially on terror outfilts of kashmir. So Iran's position is more for its survival rather than helping India.
Israel presence automatically means American presenceBy: anagunalan | 30-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Never in the history of the modern world, any nation has caused so much annihilation, destruction, misery, sufferings of humanity, exploitation of world's wealth and suppressing of democracy in the third world and human rights violations as the USA has done, India is blindly supporting the USA, people like Chanakya are as usual victims of American propaganda, India supporting the USA against Iran is a huge treachery and ungrateful act, India will learn its bitterest lesson for its new foreign policy that has gone too far away from its balanced views and neutrality that great leaders like Gandhi and Nehru held. The USA supported the most horrible playboy ruler of Iran for 28 years(Shah), when Iran became a thriving free nation, the US wants to plot regime change simply because US listens to the Jewish lobby, so does India. Morally Iran is far advanced than India; Iran has blocked about 6 million pornographic sites but we in India allow them and ruin the lives of our youth.
Make our world nuclear freeBy: Concerned World Citizenn | 30-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward What the whole world should think is do we really need nuclear weapons. Make our planet nuclear weapons free. Why should Americans and the Russians keep it and command the other countries to not to have it? Americans have proved that they are more dangerous than any other country by using Atom bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. For them when it comes to meeting their goals they don't look at the means that they use to attain it.
Iran should never make the same mistake that Saddam Hussein made in Iraq. The US behave outside the International Law.By: anagunalan | 30-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Iran should learn hard lessons from Iraq%u2019s sad story. Disarmament and compliance should never be an option when your obnoxious, unprincipled and roguish adversary has far more powerful weapons. Saddam Hussein allowed the vultures of IAE to turn his pockets out, he ended up in prison and eventually in his grave and his country was ruined, undermined, destroyed and was pushed back into the Stone Age for decades( 12 lakh Iraqis died, 42 lakh Iraqis became refugees,34 lakh orphans, about 5 lakh widows: all these to kill one man Saddam Hussein? Waht a huge terrorist state the USA?) Iran should not make the same mistake. Iranians should have their freedom of choice and restore some balance to the region where Israel remains the sole rogue state. There are other countries which are real threats, and they have not signed the NPT but Iran has and abides by the international law. So why talk about sanctions?
THE US and RUSSIA have 27,000 nuclear war heads, let them reduce them firstBy: anagunalan | 30-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward According to El-Baradei, the next wave of proliferation would involve about 20 "virtual nuclear weapons states", which can produce plutonium or highly enriched uranium and possess the know-how to make warheads, but stop short of assembling a weapon. Why not the US tell all those 20 nations, why pick on Iran alone? The 20 nations would therefore remain technically compliant with the NPT while being within a couple of months of deploying and using a nuclear weapon. People in the Middle East are repressed by their own governments( GAZA massacre for example) and feeling unjustly treated by the outside world. This combination makes this region a ticking bomb. No country boldly talks about the 27,000 warheads that the world possesses. Out of these, 95% are in Russia and the U.S. Is it unfair that two nations can amass and monopolise nuclear terrorism. If they are sincere, they must come forward and cut the arsenals to 1,000 each, or even 500. Then urge the world to ban nuclear weapons.
