The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested Ramkumar, the friend and relative Ghaziabad youth Ranbir Singh who was killed in an alleged fake encounter in Dehradun on July 3.
Ramkumar was reportedly with Ranbir on the day the latter was killed by the Dehradun Police in Ladpur forest. The Dehradun Police had claimed that the two — accompanied by another friend Pradeep — were on a motorcycle and they had snatched the service revolver of sub-inspector G D Bhatt when they were stopped for checking at the Dalanwala checkpost. Following this, the trio was chased and Ranbir was killed in an encounter.
The police’s claim, however, faced vehement protests, with Ranbir’s family alleging that the encounter was fake. Ramkumar, meanwhile, surrendered before the CBI on August 20 and reportedly told the agency that they did snatch the SI’s revolver and had later thrown it away somewhere.
The CBI claimed that they arrested Ramkumar yesterday from Baghpat district in Uttar Pradesh. The agency will be pressing charges of robbery against him for snatching SI’s revolver.
When contacted, Ranbir’s father Rabindra Singh said, “I don’t have any knowledge. CBI has not told us anything.”
Ramkumar, meanwhile, was produced before a CBI court, which reportedly sent him to 14-day judicial remand.
The CBI, meanwhile, has already collected all the evidence in the case from the spot and from the police vehicles. The 27-day investigation by the CBI has already suggested that “encounter was fake”.
