The delay in the Southwest monsoon has led to a considerable dip in the generation of hydro power plants in the Northern states. Plants like Nathpa Jhakri,Tehri and Chamera, which supply power to Delhi as well as other northern states, are generating less than their capacity since the availability of water is insufficient. The problem is particularly acute during the day,as reserve supplies of water are saved for generation during the evening peak hours. Due to this, loadshedding of 100 MW had to be carried out in the Capital during the day, a senior power department official said.
According to Delhi Transco, the total loadshedding affected in Delhi on Friday amounted to 200 MW.
We also had to deal with the fact that one 210-MW unit of the Badarpur plant had to be shut down due to a technical snag, the official said. In addition, almost 11 instances of under frequency relays were reported. The frequency in the Northern Grid usually dips when all northern states are overdrawing from it at the same time. Once it dips to a certain point,we have to carry out loadshedding to prevent damage to the Grid, the official said.
There were large-scale powercuts in the Capital on Friday. While most areas experienced one-hour-long outages, certain areas in South and West Delhi complained of powercuts as long as two hours.
DDA approves land for plant
Five months after discom BSES received an in principle approval from the Delhi Development Authority for setting up a 1400-MW power plant in Southwest Delhis Tikri Kalan area, the DDA finally carried out the change in land-use in a meeting held on June 3. Sources in the Power department said it could take up to two more months before possession is handed over to BSES. While plans for setting up the plant have been under discussion for over two years, the discom had to wait till it was allotted land by the DDA. BSESs initial request was for at least 300 acre but the DDA decided to approve 160 acre in Tikri Kalan, a Power department official said. Once the discom receives all approvals, the plant is expected to be functional in 36 months,at a total budget of Rs 5,600 crore. The proposed plant will be a gas-based plant.
