Delay in revaluation results leaves MU students in lurch

Despite the Bombay High Court’s directive to speed up the process of revaluation, the delay in results by Mumbai University has left nearly 1,500 students worried.

Despite the Bombay High Court’s directive to speed up the process of revaluation, the delay in results by Mumbai University has left nearly 1,500 students worried. The court on November 23,2010,had directed the University of Mumbai to declare the revaluation results within 15 days from the day of submission of applications.

According to students, the university takes up to three months to declare the revaluation results. Due to the delay, students are unable to decide weather to appear for supplementary exams or not. Students say revaluation results are often declared after the date of the supplementary exam, resulting in a loss of a year.

Amol Ghadge,a second-year Pharmacy student missed his supplementary exam after he was declared passed in revaluation on the university website, but he failed to get his new marksheet. “I had failed in my first-year exam, the result of which was declared in July 2010. I had applied for revaluation immediately. However, the result was not declared till October, and I was forced to fill the forms for supplementary exam. Just three days before my supplementary exam,I was declared pass. However,I have not received my marksheets even after three months. I already dropped a year and cannot even apply for a job in the absence of my marksheet,” said Amol.

Another M Pharm student,Hardik Aashar, said,“We have been doing rounds of the university and the officials keep assuring us that we will receive our marksheets by next week.”

In March 2010,the Mumbai University under the then acting vice-chancellor Chandra Krishnamurthy had announced new directives to put revaluation on the fast track. Under these, the university claimed that the revaluation results would be declared within 30 days.

Each year, the university sees about 50,000 applications for photocopies of answersheets, out of which 60 per cent apply for revaluation.

Bhushan Barve,a third-year electronic engineering student, said,“It is due to the faulty evaluation process of the university that students are left in the lurch. Students will not be able to get a job as long as their previous year’s results are not declared. University is ruining our careers and they must do something about the delay in results.”

Professor Vilas Shinde, controller of examination,Mumbai University, said,“Results of approximately 1,500 students are pending. We are in the process of declaring the results one by one in next two-three days. The delay this year was due to the new centralised assessment system that we have adopted.”
