Even after five days of rain, the Capital till Tuesday had received only half the normal amount of rainfall it receives each year. However, despite the heat, humidity and discomfort endured by residents during the ongoing monsoon months, latest data from the India Meteorological Department reveals that Delhi has fared better than the rest of the NCR region.
Till Tuesday morning,Delhi had received 216.4 mm rainfall of a total of 461 mm,Faridabad had received merely 105 mm of the expected 312.8 mm and Gurgaons tally was 127.7 mm of 341 mm rainfall.
While Delhis monsoon deficiency stood at 53 per cent on Tuesday,Gurgaon and Faridabad were 63 and 66 per cent deficient respectively. Which means of the total rainfall expected in a year, the satellite towns have received just over a quarter. With monsoon months of July and August, coming to a close, there are now very feeble chances of the deficiency being met in the NCR region.
The reason, cites Met department officials,is due to the fact that the rainfall this year has been erratic over different areas in the same state. Hence, while Faridabad received just 34 per cent rainfall,Ambala,in the same state, received 55 per cent.
Speaking of the situation in Delhi,R C Vashisht,Director,Regional Met Department,Safdarjung Airport, said,Delhi receives a total of 42 days of rain during the monsoon,if the rain is above 2.5 millimetre a day. This time, the number of rainy days has reduced drastically. We have less than 10 days left in the monsoon season,so there is little hope of catching up.
Vashisht added that no rainfall is expected in the NCR region in the next five days apart from a few brief showers, which further reduces expectations of any monsoon relief.
The IMD has predicted rainfall in some areas of Uttarakhand and UP today, which will subside after 24 hours. In Delhi and surrounding areas,it may rain scantily today, but from tomorrow the temperature will start rising again, Vashisht added.
