Delhi HC Bar asks BCI to take action against Bhushans

'If allegations are correct,then the BCI should uphold the dignity of the bar.'

The Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) has sought initiation of suo-motu action for “professional misconduct” against senior advocates Shanti Bhushan and his son Jayant Bhushan in connection with the purchase of property in Noida.

In a letter to the Chairman of Bar Council of Delhi (BCI),secretary of the DHCBA D K Sharma said if allegations against the Bhushans are correct,then the BCI should uphold the dignity of the bar.

“If the allegations and facts as reported are correct then it’s a very serious matter affecting the entire legal fraternity and a serious professional misconduct by these senior advocates (Shanti Bhushan and Jayant).

“The lawyers in Delhi have great expectations from the Bar Council of Delhi in upholding the dignity of the bar,” secretary of DHCBA D K Sharma said.

Shanti Bhushan,a member of the joint committee to draft the Lokpal Bill and his younger son Jayant were in controversy recently over allotment of priced farmhouse plots to them in Noida.

The controversy arose after reports were published saying that the Bhushans were allotted 10,000 square metre plots valued at Rs 3.5 crore each to them by the Uttar Pradesh government in 2009.

Jayant,who appeared against UP government in the case relating to installing of statues in a Noida park,had admitted that the allotment was arbitrary but there was no question of conflict for him.
