The Delhi government’s new industrial policy, which will be unveiled in December, comes 27 years after the last policy was drafted in 1982. By March next year, nearly 40,000 industries emitting pollutants beyond the permissible limits will be closed as per government orders, Newsline takes a look at the present industrial set-up in Delhi.

* According to the Fifth Economic Census held in 2005, Delhi was placed 16th in the all India ranking with respect to the number of establishments, having about 1.8 per cent of the total establishments in India. With regard to employment, Delhi was ranked 12th in the country.

* At present, Delhi has 28 industrial estates spread over 4,647 acre

* In 2008, the total count of factories in Delhi registered under the Factories Act stood at 6,892.

* As per Supreme Court orders, 15 industrial centres in Delhi have to form individual Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs). They have to contribute 50 per cent of the funds spent on constructing them, and the full amount spent on running them. The industries, however, owe the government as much as Rs 77.24 crore spent on constructing and running the 10 CETPs currently operating in the city.

* The number of the working factories increased to 7,650 from 6,076 between 1996 and 2006. 7,439 (about 97 per cent) of the factories were under the private sector and 190 under the public sector during 2006.

* The average daily employment increased marginally from 30,0310 during 2002 to 34,5801 during 2006.
