The national capital may run out of ground water by 2015 if Delhiites do not regulate their current average water consumption, estimated around 225 litres a day,a study has claimed.
We need to curtail the average water consumption significantly and judiciously as the water levels have already gone down, said the study report brought out by the ASSOCHAM.
The report titled Water — Myths and Mysteries warned that Delhi may run out of ground water by 2015 if citizens do not regulate their current water consumption and if priority is not given to water harvesting and its treatment.
It also said that Delhi Jal Board supplies just over 30 million cubic meters of water per day to its end users of which only 17 million cubic meters reach the consumers.
It attributed the more than 50 per cent losses to infrastructure problems such as leaking pipes.
Twenty-seven per cent of homes in New Delhi receive tap water for less than two hours a day, although Delhi Jal Board claims an average water supply of four hours a day, it said.
Releasing the report today, secretary general of ASSOCHAM,D S Rawat said Delhi’s per capita daily water requirement is is too high given the supply side management.
The report said the national capital region has more than 3.5 million wells which has affected the ground water levels.
