The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is constructing a signature Metro Bridge at the Moolchand crossing and it is expected to be completed in 10 months time.
The bridge, which will be at a height of 12 m above the road at this point, has been designed with the help of French company Systra. A detailed design was completed in four months,as the DMRC had to ensure that traffic movement below the bridge was not disrupted even for a single day during construction.
The DMRC,therefore, adopted the extra dosed technique,as per which the 167.5 m-long bridge will have three large spans the central span being 65.5 m across and the other two spans being 51 m across.
The bridge will have only two pillars (piers),located on the side of the Ring Road,in order to avoid hindrance to traffic. Segments of the bridge are being pre-cast in a casting yard and are being brought to the site, where they will be put up in the night so that the traffic movement below is not disrupted, Anuj Dayal,DMRC spokesperson, said.
The supporting cables will be encased in painted tubular pipes to give the bridge a better look. The cables, which will be resting on top of the pylons, are being fabricated in Hong Kong and China.
Fifteen per cent of construction on the bridge has already been completed and Metro train trial runs over the bridge are expected to start in April 2010,as this section is scheduled to open in September the same year, Dayal said.
The Metro Bridge, the first extra dosed bridge to be constructed by the DMRC,will be parallel to the Moolchand Flyover and is a part of the 20.16 km-long Central Secretariat-Badarpur corridor.
