Delhi Police told to impound buses violating revised permit conditions

The Delhi Police has been asked to verify and start impounding buses violating the revised permit conditions which require that the names and photograph of driver and staff be displayed inside buses.

This was conveyed to the Delhi Police by the Special Task Force headed by Union Home Secretary R K Singh, constituted to look into the safety issues of women in Delhi post the December 16 gangrape case, at its second meeting held last week.

The issues of Photo I-card for public service vehicle crew, CCTV and web-cam at parking and shopping malls, verification of schoolbus staff, vulnerable bus routes and street-lighting were also reviewed by the task force.

Delhi Police informed that a women's help desk has been made operational in all police stations.

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) said they have prepared a list of volunteers and would start deploying them at the women's help desks in consultation with the Delhi Police. As part of efforts to enhance security for women and respond promptly to their distress calls, Delhi Police has revamped its helpline number 100 by increasing the number of lines from 60 to 100.

The number of lines for phone number 1091 meant for women in distress has been increased from two to 10. Anti-stalking numbers, 1096 and 1091, will be merged, taking the total number of lines to 12.
