Delhi police vow to protect women

The Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday said that the police will seek maximum punishment – life sentence – for the accused in connection with the gangrape and brutal beating of a paramedical student on a bus in New Delhi.

The Ministry also promised a broad campaign to protect women on buses. Home Secretary R K Singh said the bus drivers would be required to display their identification prominently, buses would be forced to remove tinting from their windows and plainclothes police would be placed on buses to protect female passengers.

Last weekend's gangrape of the 23-year-old student has sparked days of protests across the country from women demanding authorities take tougher action to protect them.

Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said police arrested a fifth suspected attacker Thursday night and were hunting for the last assailant.
