Delhi underground: Weekend bandh

Parking was barred in Ghaziabad court premises after the shootout last month. The Bar association had asked for the ban, saying that access to the court was completely unregulated. The association now says that the ban on parking forces lawyers to walk a long distance, leading to unnecessary delays. They even called a bandh in protest of the parking ban. A police officer said, "Parking isn't the real issue. They just wanted a Friday off so that they could get a three-day weekend, which is why they called the bandh."

Challenging autopsy

Students of forensic medicine at AIIMS,where the autopsies of Ponty Chadha and brother Hardeep were conducted, referred to the case as one of the most iconic academic studies in firearm injuries. "The trajectory of the bullets for both the victims was unique. Double entries for the same bullets in the body — which are rare — were seen in both bodies. "We made coloured diagrams in the report — which is not a common practice — since the trajectory of the bullets was so complicated. We thought this would make it easy for police and the court to understand the report. From an academic perspective, this case will become historic," a resident doctor said. Students also learned the use of metal detectors in autopsy. "A simple X-ray scan couldn't spot the exact location of the bullets. We had to use metal detectors. We learnt how to manoeuvre the instrument to mitigate interference from the metal slabs where the bodies were kept," another resident doctor said.

Botched operation

The Delhi Police Commissioner is said to be very unhappy with the way the South District police handled the Ponty Chadha case. The commissioner transferred the case to the Crime Branch on Friday evening. According to sources, even senior police officers from South District were not aware of the case being transferred to the Crime Branch. The commissioner was reportedly unhappy because the South District police believed Sukhdev Singh Namdhari's statement without corroborating facts and let him go. The South District police claimed Namdhari was arrested on a tip-off from his home town, but the truth is he was arrested while giving an interview to television reporters.
