More women cops
In a recent review meeting between the Delhi Police and Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar is learnt to have requested for 2,000 additional personnel to make the city safer. The Delhi Police also wants to hire more women personnel. Senior officers, however, said the force already has 5,000 vacancies, which will be filled up by the end of this year. More women personnel may be hired only after amendments to the law. At present, there is no reservation for women. "For the kind of promises the police have made to the public, we might need 50 per cent reservation for women in the general as well as the reserved categories," a senior officer said.
Bright side
After errors in examination results were reported last week, Delhi University officials were heard defending themselves. "For the first time in years, the university has declared results within a month. No one writes about that. Look at the amount of answerscripts that had to be corrected. Some cases of such discrepancies were bound to take place. It will take time for the process to be streamlined," a university official said.
Midnight Metro
After the gangrape incident, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has received several demands to extend services till midnight. However, the Metro operates till midnight and even after that on some occasions and officials keep explaining that to people. DMRC Managing Director Mangu Singh said many people wrongly believe that the Metro stops at 11 pm. "The last Metro leaves its source station at 11 pm. However, it reaches its destination by 12 am to 12.15 am. We need to create awareness about this," Singh said.
Drinks break
Delhi Police's annual press conference, held a month after the gangrape incident, was nerve-wracking for top officers. The commissioner spoke about the shortfalls and achievements of his department non-stop, in a monotonous voice for almost an hour, before taking a break for a glass of water. Photographers, looking for the best shot, waited patiently till Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar drank water. As soon as he took a sip, all photographers began clicking. Kumar remarked, "It seems the police is not permitted a break for water."
