In a move that is likely to make environment activists cringe, the Delhi University is planning to cut 350 trees in the North Campus as part of a traffic management and streetscaping plan for the Commonwealth Games. The project, the documents of which were uploaded on the DU website last week, was approved by the Lieutenant-Governor in a meeting on May 6.
Some trees along Chattra Marg,GTB Marg and Sudhir Marg are required to be removed or relocated for unhindered movement of pedestrians and physically challenged, subject to and approval from the competent authority, the document states. Those who attended the meeting said the 350 trees have been identified.
The plan has, however, already run into a roadblock, with Ramjas College opposing what it calls illegal acquisition of its land. DUs plans state 502 sq m of land owned by the college will be acquired.
DU has taken the decision without taking the college into confidence. The L-G had directed that a simulation model of the project be prepared and discussed with us. DU is also against the one-month trial that the L-G had asked for, said principal Rajendra Prasad.
Our classrooms are only 20 metres away from the road. Further acquisition will disrupt the smooth conduct of classes, said Prasad. The land to be acquired includes a part of the property on which the principals residence stands.
DU Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental, meanwhile, said he is in possession of letters in which Ramjas College had agreed to concede land to the University. They have now gone back on their word. We have to rise for the cause of the University, he said.
Ramjas administration will organise a dharna on Tuesday morning to protest against the issue.
DU authorities seems unperturbed. I had a meeting with the officials today and directed that the traffic plan be smoothly implemented before the undergraduate admission process begins on May 28, said Ompal Singh,Deputy Proctor.
The Traffic Plan
Chattra Marg, which runs in front of the Law Faculty, and GTB Marg, which runs in front of SRCC,will become one-way. SUDHIR BOSE MARG,which runs in front of Ramjas College, and VIJAY NAGAR MARG,which runs parallel to it by the side of Patel Chest Institute and Miranda House, will also become one-way. VEHICLES would be able to enter Chattra Marg from Mall Road and exit from GTB Marg. Entry to Chattra Marg from GTB Marg will be allowed through Vijay Nagar Marg.
