The city on Saturday got its first solar water purification plant, capable of producing over 5,000 litres of drinking water a day.

Inaugurating the facility at Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidhyalaya (RRVV) in East Delhi, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said by the year-end, all 17 Delhi RRVVs will have a similar system in place if this pilot facility turns out well.

"Water is a fundamental human right and it is imperative that we manage it as a natural resource in the right way," Diskshit said.

She said the water produced by the solar plant, built at a cost of around Rs 25 lakh, met WHO standards and would be allocated to more than 750 students from economically backward families living around the plant.

The system will be tested to determine if it can be replicated. "If all goes well, similar systems will be installed in all 17 RRVVs by December," Dikshit said.

Sanchaita Gajapati Raju, Managing Trustee of NGO SANA , which helped install and fund the plant, said the facility used solar-powered panels and micro-ionising water purification processes.

"This process converts brackish, contaminated water, which usually goes to waste, into potable drinking water," Raju said.
