Delhis pride might be its CNG-propelled transport system,but the fact remains that this sector is the heaviest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in the city. A report commissioned by the Delhi government last year has found that the transport sector alone spouts 46 per cent of greenhouse emissions,followed by the domestic sector at 34 per cent. The generous use of LPG and electricity has pumped up the figures for the domestic sector. The report,called Inventorisation of Greenhouse Gases Sources and Sinks in Delhi,has been conducted by the Centre for Environmental Management of Degraded Ecosystems,Delhi University,and was tabled in the Assembly on Wednesday by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit,who also holds the Environment portfolio. The report has also sketched a carbon map for Delhi,in line with the carbon map prepared by Britain in 2006. The map is based on emission readings of four key sectors transport,domestic,commercial and industrial. The report has estimated Delhis total carbon emission at 44 million metric tonnes (MMT) but this is only one third of the CO2 emission in London. In a discussion after the report was tabled,Dikshit said Delhis green policies are being showcased at Copenhagen where the world is discussing the climate. Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta has taken the Delhi governments climate change agenda to the Mayors conference in Copenhagen for the UN-sponsored summit. Dikshit said: We have managed to make breakthroughs in water recycling. We have also increased the forest cover with our Bhagidari initiatives. While we are strengthening civic sense among the people through a campaign before the Commonwealth Games,we must learn to use water and electricity judiciously.
