Construction work, increasing traffic, or signals on the blink — there are as many ‘reasons’ as there are points of jams. Ayesha Arvind and photographer Mikma Lepcha look at five nightmare stretches

    DHAULA KUAN
One of the busiest interchanges in the city, Dhaula Kuan services thousands of commuters every day. But the road here is riddled with potholes. Adding to the troubles is the adjoining Ridge Road, where the Metro Airport Express Line is being constructed along the central verge. Result: barely one lane is available for traffic. Regular commuters say they avoid this stretch now. “If I have to go home during the peak hours, I take a detour through SP Marg to reach my home in New Rajinder Nagar,” says Ramesh Puri, who works in Gurgaon.

    OUTER RING ROAD
The Public Works Department (PWD) is constructing a flyover that is scheduled for completion next year. Till then, however, the ongoing work leads to constant traffic jams. Although traffic signals have been put up every 500 metres on the stretch, most do not work. The condition of the road is equally bad.

    AIIMS FLYOVER
PWD officials admit this stretch gets choked with traffic every day, particularly during peak hours. The reason, according to them, is the Capital’s vehicle population that has “simply exploded” in the past decade. PWD has now engaged a consultant to carry out a traffic and transportation study to prepare a whole new model for the intersection.

    ITO JUNCTION
The traffic police have tried every trick in the trade on this stretch, including deploying additional staff and using technically advanced traffic lights. But no precaution seems to be able to stand up to the might of traffic from East Delhi and Ghaziabad flowing into Central Delhi, via ITO. And with Metro construction on Vikas Marg, a major arterial road, it is par for the course, almost, that the ITO junction is choked with vehicles at most times of day.

Sore DelhiBy: Kishore | 17-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward When will we see roads of international standard in India? Pot holes in the roads of our capital city of the nation. It is really shameful for every Indian. All the international visitors will take one look at this misery and think what a dump we live in. We should not let those responsible live in peace. Every one of us should show our patriotism by acting positively to achieve a high standard of roads and railways.
RTR IIT stretchBy: anil nayal | 17-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Completion date is getting delayed. Responsible authorities are wasting public money by delaying it again and again. They should think on it.
Dhaula kuan sore pointBy: C.Sasidharan | 17-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Not only Dhaula kuan - actually the problem starts right from Kirby place where both the lines converge - means the upper bridge and the lower road - traffic point and then the traffic comes to a halt. Will the authorities do somethings to ease the traffic and commutation on this road more smooth. I am a daily commuter on this road by chartered bus. C.Sasidharan, Vikaspuri, New Delhi
