Demolition of illegal structures continues

Despite the violence on Sunday after part of a slum in Mulund was burned down, demolitions by BMC continue.

On Wednesday, an authorised foundation in Borivali was razed on the orders of the municipal commissioner.

Four unauthorised structures with iron sheets as roof were demolished in Moti Mahal, Sion (West), last week. A couple of weeks ago, BMC bulldozed around 1,400 illegal huts in Ganpat Patil Nagar, Dahisar.

Corporators are divided.

"BMC has been sitting on the issue for too long. It is because of its inaction that there was violence in Mulund. There were several complaints that slum-dwellers in the area had become a nuisance, but BMC did not act. BMC must decide right away demolition of all illegal slums," said BJP leader Dilip Patel.

Six corporators were arrested by Navghar Police Sunday for allegedly leading a mob that burned down around 250 shanties in Neelam Nagar, Mulund.

Leader of opposition Dyanraj Nikam said there should be no indiscriminate demolition. "Action should be taken only after a proper discussion. Poor people living in slums should not suffer because of rampant demolition," he said.
