Armando Colaco has set a benchmark for all Indian coaches. Now he has started to dream big — an Asian Champions League berth for Dempo. Those who brag about their achievements in Indian club football should rather take a leaf out of Dempo coach’s book.
Dempo were very close to make it last season. They played the AFC semi-final and were just one match away from qualifying for the Champions League. The lost the play-off tie. This time, Colaco is determined to break new grounds.
“It’s very difficult to qualify for the Champions League. The two finalists of the AFC Cup get automatic qualification, and the third place is reserved for the winner of the play-off tie which is played between the losing semi-finalists. We have been playing in the AFC Cup for the last four years. It’s time to raise the bar,” Colaco told The Indian Express.
Although very difficult, but Colaco doesn’t think it’s an unrealistic target to set for his players. “Playing in the top rung would mean you got to match your opponents in fitness and skill. Consistency is paramount. Our main aim will be to win the Federation Cup and qualify for the AFC Cup. If that goal is achieved, we will start our preparations for the next level. It’s not impossible and I have confidence in my boys,” Colaco commented.
A story is doing the rounds that Dempo want to have Syrian national team player Abdul Razak Al Hussain on board. Hussain, who played for top Syrian club Al Jaish last season, is reportedly a free player at the moment.
