A 15-year-old boy from Sangam Vihar died of Dengue Shock Syndrome at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Friday,making it the years first death. So far,186 cases of dengue have been reported from the city.
Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS) is the most severe form of the viral fever.
While developing it is not common,experts maintain that dengue cases will trickle in till late November.
Dengue Shock Syndrome is common among children and the mortality rate is high, said Dr N K Yadav,Municipal health officer. The patient was admitted at AIIMS and died early on Friday morning.
In Dengue Shock Syndrome,the shock occurs two to six days after the symptoms appear. The patient collapses. Other symptoms include blood spots,bleeding gums and nosebleeds. The mortality rate ranges from 6 to 30 per cent.
Clusters of dengue cases,meanwhile,have been reported from the Delhi University area. Faculty members have approached the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and health department officials .
The teachers had approached us after dengue cases were reported from the campus, said Yadav.
Our inspectors who visited the construction sites inside the university have reported heavy breeding. We have started daily fogging. The dengue-causing mosquito cannot thrive in winters,but we are expecting case till November-end.
The rugby stadium site near the School of Open Learning has several waterlogged areas. MCD officials visit the site every morning to fumigate waterlogged spots, said security personnel guarding the site. A large amount of water was flowing out from the site to the road from a leaking water carrier.
Another Games construction site worrying the DU campus residents is the training ground near Kirori Mal College. An official of the World Universities Service Health Centre said they have seen an increased number of dengue cases.
I had a meeting with the medical administrator of the health centre on Monday to discuss the situation, said SK Vij,Dean of Student Welfare,DU.
