Dense fog at Indira Gandhi International airport, 50 flights affected

Dense fog today returned after four days which affected the schedule of about 50 flights, airport sources said.

Fog started to descend at the airport around 3.30 AM, when visibility dropped suddenly from 1200 metres to 400 metres at third runway, while it was above 1200 metres for main runway.

But within half an hour, dense fog also enveloped main runway and runway visibility decreased to 150 to 225 metres and at third runway it dropped to 50 to 100 metres.

The general visibility dropped to less than 50 metres and the situation remain till 9.30 AM. This led to delay in schedule of 50 flights, airport sources said.

Fog plays havoc in Punjab, Haryana

Fog crippled normal life in most parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh today throwing air, rail and road traffic out of gear even as minimum temperature in the region rose due to cloudy sky.

A thick blanket of fog enveloped most parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh this morning affecting air, rail and road traffic in the region, officials said here.

While most of the flights from Chandigarh airport were cancelled or re-scheduled, several trains criss-crossing the region, including Shan-e Punjab and Howrah-Amritsar Mail were running hours behind schedule due to low visibility.

Besides, the motorists on the highways and state roads were moving at snail's pace.

The minimum temperatures hovered between four degrees celsius below normal to two notches above normal in the region, the Met office said here.

Hisar was the coldest place in the plains of Punjab and Haryana with a low of 2.2 degrees celsius, four notches below normal.

While Narnaul settled at a low of 3 degrees celsius, three notches below normal, the minimum temperature at Bhiwani was 3.2 degrees celsius.

Among other places, Amritsar braved a low of 5.2 degrees celsius, two notches above normal, followed by Chandigarh 6.7 degrees celsius, one notch above normal. The low at Patiala was 7.8 degrees celsius, two notches above normal.

The Met department has forecast a drop in minimum temperatures in the region during the next 24 hours with foggy and misty conditions to continue in the days ahead.

Mercury plummets in Rajasthan, Shri Ganganagar records 0.6 degree C

Mercury plummeted in northern parts of Rajasthan with Shri Ganganagar freezing at a low of 0.6 degree celsius, 4 degrees below normal.

Shri Ganganagar remained the coldest place in Rajasthan and the night temperature fell to 0.6 degree celsius from yesterday's 1.6 degree Celsius.

Cold waves affected normal life in other northern areas where Bikaner, Pilani and Churu recorded a low of 2.4, 2.6 and 4.5 degree celsius respectively.

In western parts of the state, Jaisalmer, Barmer and Jodhpur recorded the minimum temperature at 6.1, 6.5 and 7.8 degree C respectively.

The mercury settled at 8.5 degrees in the state capital Jaipur, according to the Met department.

Cold conditions is likely to prevail in the state in the next 24 hours, according to Met office.
