Derailment throws train schedules off the track

Wheel trolley of the sixth coach of a CST-Kalyan local derailed between CST and Masjid at 8.42 am.

More than 90 suburban trains were cancelled and 31 diverted after a Kalyan-bound train derailed just outside the CST during the morning peak hours,inconveniencing thousands of commuters. The wheel trolley of the sixth coach of a CST-Kalyan local,which had left the station at 8.38 am,derailed between CST and Masjid at 8.42 am.

“Accident Relief Train and CR officials rushed to the spot to oversee the restoration work,which is on in full swing,” a CR spokesperson said,adding that by 11 am the front portion of the derailed local was removed. “The cause of the derailment is under investigation.”

The Commissioner of Railway Safety (Central circle) will conduct an inquiry into the incident,he added.

Buddhiram,a 42-year-old passenger,suffered an injury on his right leg and has been awarded an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 5,000 by the Central Railway (CR).

All fast line services were diverted on the slow line between Byculla and CST and the derailment caused suburban trains to run behind schedule by 30 minutes to two hours during peak hours. “I reached office nearly 45 minutes late. My train was stuck at Parel station for more than 15 minutes. I crossed over from Parel to Elphinstone Road on the Western Railway line,” said Arvind Raman,who travels from Ghatkopar to Curry Road daily.

A total of 93 suburban up and down line trains had been cancelled till 6 pm and 31 up fast suburban trains had been diverted on the up slow line between Byculla and CST. By late afternoon,trains were running with a delay of 10 to 15 minutes.

“The affected line is expected to be restored by Wednesday evening,” the spokesperson said.
