Deshmukh report yet to reach MSRTC

Divisional Commissioner had conducted a probe and forwarded his report to the govt as per the chief minister's orders

The committee set up to look into the incident in which driver Santosh Mane drove an empty bus recklessly on the roads of Pune leaving behind a trail of death and destruction in January last year has been forwarded by Pune Divisional Commissioner Prabhakar Deshmukh. The report has not yet reached its destination, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC).

MSRTC chairman Jeevan Gore, when asked about the report said he will look into it. "I am yet to check about that report. Meanwhile, our own report is ready and there are several recommendations which we have already implemented. From frequent physical check-ups for drivers to operational restrictions for buses, we have been trying to implement all the recommendations,'' said Gore.

Deshmukh had conducted a probe and forwarded his report to the government as per the chief minister's orders.

"As asked by the chief minister we readied the report and submitted it to the government. The report should be with the transport department,'' said Deshmukh when asked about the report.

After the incident, the government had appointed two committees, one headed by Deshmukh and the other, a technical committee, set up by MSRTC. Deshmukh was asked to probe the entire incident.

The MSRTC committee was to look at technical aspects and loopholes in the MSRTC system that led to the incident an suggest remedial measures.

While the divisional commissioner's report had all details of the incident, the other report pointed out checks and balances needed to avoid any repeats.

As part of the Deshmukh probe, a public hearing was held to hear the accounts of people who survived the incident, besides eyewitness, police personnel and others. The MSRTC technical committee comprising 13 members from MSRTC and outside has recommended several measures though the report has not yet been submitted yet.
