Vilasrao Deshmukh had an impressive run in the whirlpool of state politics.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who last month completed four years of his second term in the office, resigned on Thursday. The 63-year-old Deshmukh drove to Raj Bhawan and submitted his resignation to Governor S C Jamir, soon after addressing a press conference where he thanked Congress president Sonia Gandhi for giving him an opportunity to be at the helm of affairs in the state on two occasions.

"I have served for so long in the government... it is now my duty to serve the party", Deshmukh said when asked if he would be contesting the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. "The party has to decide whether I should contest Lok Sabha or other election", Deshmukh said.

The development work done by the Congress-NCP government during my tenure would help Congress in winning the next elections, Deshmukh said.

He remained silent on who would succeed him. "The legislature party will decide and Sonia Gandhi will take the final decision", he said.

Asked about any regret during his tenure, Deshmukh pointed to the Mumbai terror attacks, adding "we could not save so many lives lost in the war against India".

At the press conference, Deshmukh was flanked by MPCC president Manikrao Thakre and working president Jaywantrao Awale.

    Maharashtra's 2nd longest serving CM

From a village sarpanch in Latur district to being at the helm of affairs of Maharashtra for two terms, Vilasrao Deshmukh had an impressive run in the whirlpool of state politics, becoming its second longest serving chief minister.

A politician with considerable experience in the legislative and administrative matters, Deshmukh had so far weathered repeated attempts to dislodge him from the top post before the Mumbai terror attacks did him in.

Deshmukh resignes.By: padmesh kumar varma | 05-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward Dear Sir, At long last the persecutors were successful. He has been made a scape goat for the faults of others. There appears to be nothing wrong even if he took his son and a film producer with him to the Taj. Mr. LK Adwani used to take his wife and the daughter on official foreign tours when he used to be the deputy prime minister and the home minister. Deshmukh has become a prey of party and media intrigues.
Wake upBy: Novice | 05-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward nothing new...The next will resign indicating some other case but the system will not change. It's Indians to decide and kick the worst so called (in the language of Omar Obdulla) polical prost.tutes
Where does the buck stop?By: Mrinal Mandal | 05-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward Instead of this resignation drama with moral responsibility, a better approach is to find out who is actually responsible for these security lapses, and penalize them. It is not the job of the CM to stand on the Mumbai shore and look for any attackers. The security of the country is in many hands. If Maha CM is one of the culprits, throw him out. Otherwise, there is no end in the resignation drama. For example, the Indian PM had some responsibility too - let him resign also. Congress President selected Deshmukh as Maha CM - she should also resign for her wrong selection. Where does the buck stop?
India's Mugabe?By: TV Puram | 04-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward Robert Mugabe is still going strong after two and a half decades. He, along with Deshmukh may be allowed the similar quantum and quality of glory.( The latter had to perform 'Lavani' for Sonia family, though.)
