  • With less than two months to go for the annual, week-long Indian Open at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC), the tournament has been abruptly moved to Gurgaon’s DLF Golf and Country Club.

Sponsors Hero Honda confirmed on Friday that the shift was certain. “I can say with assurance that DLF will be the venue for the Indian Open this year,” Hero Honda’s J Narain told The Indian Express on Friday. “As for the reasons, you will have to contact the promoters World Sports Group (WSG).

Harish Krishnamachar, a vice-president with WSG, was not immediately available for comments .

For the DGC, this is the second setback this year. The course had lost out on significant resources due to a reseeding programme in preparation for European Tour’s Indian Masters, which was cancelled.

Club captain Sanjeev Talwar said that they had not been given anything in writing, but had been told about the Indian Open decision verbally. “In fact, we were expecting the measurements and preparations for course readiness to begin.”

DLF confirmed that they had been given the go-ahead for the ‘national open’. “We’ll be hosting it in October,” DLF course director Aakash Ohri said. The last time the Indian Open was held outside the DGC was in 2001.
