The West Bengal CID is trying to bring in top Maoist leader Kobad Ghandy, who is under arrest in Delhi,to Kolkata so that he can be interrogated along with Telugu Dipak, said highly-placed sources.
Top CID officials indicated that the officers are exploring if peace talks could be brokered through the leaders in custody and a link established with those still at large.
Meanwhile,West Bengal DGP Bhupinder Singh on Friday claimed that Dipak has confessed about having connections with banned outfits like the ULFA of Assam, the LTTE in Sri Lanka and terrorist outfits of Jammu and Kashmir. The Maoists received regular instructions and help from them.
The DGP refused to give more details about the interrogation, saying: I cannot divulge all the details since that will jeopardise the investigation. He also said while Dipak stayed at Nandigram sometime last year with the pseudonym of Gauranga, while Kishenji, the other top Maoist leader, stayed under the pseudonym of Sukumar. I will not tell you the exact period that they stayed there but they were of course there to foment trouble, the DGP said.
Police teams from Andhra Pradesh and Chhatishgarh have already arrived to interrogate the top Maoist leader for whom the Andhra Pradesh government had announced Rs 10 lakh as a reward. A team of Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) from Delhi is coming to carry out the interrogation on Saturday.
Initially,he was not co-operating much with the interrogators, but when the police team from Andhra Pradesh started questioning him in Telugu he showed signs of nervousness, Singh said.
He also said the government would reward the CID team that caught Dipak with Rs 1 lakh. It was also done when Chhatradhar Mahato was arrested, Singh said. He said Dipak had confessed that he had been involved in cases like the Salboni mine blast on the route of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
