A complaint by a caste group, backed by a Samajwadi Party MP,has led to the removal of the word ‘teli’ from the chartbusting number Dhan te nan from Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey.

A similar complaint had resulted in the deletion of a line containing the word ‘mochi’ in the title track of Madhuri Dixit’s 2007 comeback film Aaja Nachle.

The Rashtriya Teli Rathore Chetna Mahasangh and SP Rajya Sabha member Ram Narayan Sahu wrote to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Censor Board alleging the song’s lyrics (…hai dil dildara

mera teli ka tel, kaudi kaudi paisa paisa paise ka khel…) penned by Gulzar, were derogatory to the Teli community.

The Censor Board took up the issue with the maker of the film,Vishal Bhardwaj, and the word ‘teli’ has now been replaced by the rhyming ‘Dilli’.

“There was a complaint from the community on this issue and a viewing of the concerned song was held with members representing the community last month. Corrective action was suggested and the Regional Office has reported compliance on the issue,” Tom Vadakkan,Member,National Central Film Censor Board, confirmed.

It is learnt that Gulzar had objected to the “street censorship” after he was asked to work around the lyrics, but the Censor Board had insisted that as per the provisions of the Cinematograph Act,concerns expressed by various communities needed to be addressed.
