Former Australian umpire Daryl Harper has criticized Indian cricketers and accused the International Cricket Council of having double standards.
Harper revealed that the main reason for him retiring a game earlier was that, despite Indian skipper M S Dhoni criticizing his decisions, the ICC did not act, according to rules,The Age reports.
The very quick answer as to why I walked away is because I felt I didn’t have the support of the ICC management to complete the task, Harper was quoted,as saying.
After I had informed them of my decision, there was a brief media release announcing that they had ‘every faith’ in me to finish the job,but I hadn’t seen or felt any of this faith, especially in what turned out to be the final two years of my career, he added.
Harper claimed that when he removed Indian pacer Praveen Kumar from the attack, because he repeatedly ran on the pitch,Dhoni tried to intimidate him by saying We have had problems with you before Daryl.
When I need to consider which team is playing and apply the laws differently for different teams, then this game has lost sight of its standards and values, Harper said.
He said the players should have been held to account under the code of conduct.
I waited for a response or some action from the management – – and I waited. No response came,no support,no action. This wasn’t the first time that I felt that I had been left out on a limb, said Harper.
In his post-match interview,Dhoni blamed incorrect decisions by Harper for prolonging the Jamaica Test, which India won inside four days
Harper said that the comments were inappropriate and Dhoni should have been sanctioned. But while ICC general manager of cricket David Richardson described Dhoni’s criticism as unfair, neither he nor match referee Jeff Crowe cited the captain.
Controversial Australian umpire Daryl Harper, who was criticised by the Indians for his poor decisions during the first Test against the West Indies, has accused Dhoni of trying to intimidate him during the match.
Harper, who was forced to withdraw from the third Test following criticisms from Indian players, said Dhoni should have been penalised for his comments on poor umpiring, adding that he was forced to break his silence following ICC’s inaction.
Harper said Dhoni tried to intimidate him after paceman Praveen Kumar was removed from the attack for repeatedly running on the pitch.
According to Cricinfo,Harper said that Dhoni approached him and said “we’ve had problems with you before,Daryl”,which the umpire interpreted as an attempt to intimidate.
“I decided what he meant was that I was one umpire not influenced by any personalities or teams or boards. He hadn’t been able to intimidate me,I think that was part of it,” Harper said.
Harper also said that Dhoni should have been punished for his comments at the post-match conference.
“If the correct decisions were made the game would have finished much earlier and I would have been in the hotel by now,” Dhoni had said.
“That was my opinion (that he should have been censured),those were inappropriate comments .. I think that’s definitely inappropriate,” Harper said.
Dhoni’s criticism was described as “unfair” by the ICC general manager of cricket David Richardson, but neither he nor the match referee Jeff Crowe elected to charge the Indian captain.
