Dhumal,Nadda leave for US,Costa Rica

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal left for his nine-day visit to US and Costa Rica,along with Forest Minister J P Nadda and a team of senior officials,on Wednesday to study forest conservation and environment protection strategies.

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal left for his nine-day visit to US and Costa Rica,along with Forest Minister J P Nadda and a team of senior officials,on Wednesday to study forest conservation and environment protection strategies.

Costa Rica ranks third in the world in terms of the 2010 Environmental Performance Index.

“This is one country that the World Bank has put on top priority for replicating some of its successful models like Payment for Environment Services (PES). Himachal Pradesh,perhaps,is the first state that has already adopted the PES model for Renuka Dam project. We would like to know more about the Costa Rican model and come back with new strategies for Himachal,” Nadda said on Tuesday.

Besides field visits slated for three days between February 12 and 15,the chief minister’s meeting with the World Bank chairman at Washington DC is an important part of the tour.

The CM and Nadda will return on February 16,while other team members,including Additional Chief Secretary Avey Shukla,Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Viney Tandon,Member Secretary,HP Pollution Control Board Nagin Nanda and Secretary,CMO,Arun Sharma will stay back in Costa Rica to wrap up discussions.
