  • A Special Investigation Team of the CID, led by IGP Geetha Johri, today began digging at suspended DIG D G Vanjhara’s huge bungalow in Ilol village in the hope of determining what happened to Kausar Bi, whose body is believed to have been burnt and dumped in the vicinity.

Rumbling through the narrow lanes of Ilol village, a JCB earthmover today made its way to the bungalow followed by police vehicles. A small room suspected to have been built over a well in which Kausar Bi’s remains were dumped two years ago was demolished earlier in the day, and then the earthmover began its task of digging up the earth for clues.

Johri’s team excavated two sites at the village, including the well, starting at noon and finishing late in the evening. The eight CID officials were assisted by experts from the Directorate of Forensic Sciences, Gandhinagar, in collecting the samples.

In what has emerged from the investigations so far, Vanjhara and his ATS team are believed to have killed Kausar Bi, the wife of Sohrabuddin Shaikh who was earlier killed in a fake encounter, and then burnt her body about 2 km from Vanjhara’s residence in Ilol. The ashes, it is suspected, were thrown into a well close to Vanjhara’s three-story bungalow on the outskirts of Ilol.

Johri’s team took the probe a step further from where it stood under former supervising officer DIG Rajnish Rai. He had collected samples from the field before being ejected from the probe, while she was able to dig up the well that is supposed to have the ashes of Kausar Bi.

    ... contd.
