Dikshit launches green drive,urges all to plant trees

A massive tree plantation drive in the city will begin soon to achieve the national target of 33 per cent green cover by 2012.

A massive tree plantation drive in the city will begin soon to achieve the national target of 33 per cent green cover by 2012.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit launched an elaborate scheme —plant a tree till a million trees this monsoon. The campaign begins July 23 and it will web-based,making extensive use of twitter,facebook and specially created blogs,government officials said on Monday.

Authorities will also make extensive use of commercial advertising space like radio,print and billboards to motivate Delhi residents to participate in the green project.

A senior environment official said radio jingles are already being broadcast in four FM channels and the Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC) will provide

300 informative panels across the city free of cost with information about the campaign. Special posters will also be put up in government organisations and restaurants.

“More than 1 million saplings have been procured and plans have been chalked out for their distribution,” said Dikshit about the ambitious project.

Environment Secretary Keshav Chandra said free saplings will be distributed at 50 Metro stations,51 selected petrol pumps,52 CNG stations,10 major government offices and Dilli Haat at both Pitampura and INA Market.

“The government will also work with 300 schools and more than 600 Residents’ Welfare Associations who will participate in the plantation drive. A special Bhagidari workshop is also being organised for more than 1,000 RWAs across the city,” Chandra said.

Cabinet Ministers,MPs,Mayors,MLAs and Councillors from Delhi have been requested to organise functions in their constituencies to initiate plantation drives. The chief minister will also,through special letters,invite students and VIPs to participate.

Plans have also been put in place for the maintenance of the planted saplings and Dikshit said that treated waste water from sewage treatment plants would be used for watering the saplings.
