Taking suo motu cognisance of the violence indulged in by the Advocates Association of Bangalore (AAB) in the Karnataka High Court on Monday, in defiance of a stay order, a division Bench of the court on Tuesday issued notices to the president and secretary of the association.
A one-day boycott of the courts by the AAB in protest against Chief Justice P D Dinakaran, for presiding over cases while facing allegations of impropriety and land encroachment, turned violent on Monday with advocates barging into court halls and forcing judges to end sittings.
Advocates disrupted the Chief Justice’s court, held two judges — Justice V Gopal Gowda and Justice B V Nagarathna — captive for refusing to bow to the lawyers’ demands, and jostled the Chief Justice when he attempted to obtain the release of the judges locked up in a courtroom.
The advocates’ protest took place despite a special Bench of the High Court imposing a stay on a November 4 resolution of the advocates’ association to hold the one-day protest.
On Tuesday, as court functioning returned to normalcy under heavy police cover, a division Bench comprising Justice K Sreedhar Rao and Justice Ravi Mallimath issued notices to the advocates’ association president K N Puttegowda and secretary R Rajanna for defying the stay order.
The advocates had claimed on Monday that the stay order by the special Bench was not binding on their association. The case has been adjourned till November 13.
