Directors of ‘fake’ institutions booked for fraud

Directors of allied educational institutions, the Maharashtra Education and Training Foundation, Maharashtra Education and Training Private Limited, and Maharashtra Education and Training Business School, have been booked by Hadapsar police for allegedly operating the institutions without government's permission and duping students.

The first information report (FIR) was registered against directors Satish Nair and Anish Mahajan after a complaint by students Abhijit Ashoke Vyas (25), and his cousin Ravi Gavli (25). In their complaint they stated they were duped of Rs 5 lakh they had paid as fees.

According to the FIR, the institutions allegedly running without mandatory permissions attracted students through newspaper ads. An ad in 2010 propelled Vyas and his brother to enroll in an MBA course offered by the institute and they paid a tuition fee of Rs 5 lakh for the course, the FIR states.

Police sub-inspector DR Madne, the investigating officer in the case, said that the directors had allegedly taken the students' original marksheets and other documents.

"During 2010-2012, the directors took the marksheets of students. Also, the directors claimed their institutes were affiliated with the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, and promised degrees," he said.

Gavli said that there were 44 students when the course commenced but many left midway after they found the institute wanting. "Only 24 completed the course. Post the final examinations, they received no degrees," he said.

Madne stated that after the complaint was made, he had gone to Magarpatta and Hadapsar offices of the institute but found them locked.

"We understand that these directors were involved in similar cheating cases in New Delhi also. Some foreign students are suspected to have been duped, as well. Our investigations are on," he said.
