The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on Wednesday slapped a fine of Rs 60,000 on the contractor responsible for daily cleaning of BRTS buses.

A surprise check in the morning by Janmarg officials revealed that of the 96 BRTS buses, 26 were sent out on routes from the depot without being cleaned.

"On being asked, the contractor used to say that the buses were being cleaned regularly. He also challenged us to come and see the cleaning works," a senior official said. The contractor was summoned to the spot and was made to witness the unpleasant scene of workers.

Deputy municipal commissioner U C Padia, who is in-charge of BRTS maintenance, said the problem was due to the monsoon season when buses get dirty as they pass from waterlogged areas and rainwater falling on them relentlessly.

He said the problem would be solved with end of monsoon spell. He also said buses were cleaned daily at Ranip and Chandola depots.
