Discoms to provide power in rural areas based on urban model

To beat scarcity of power in Haryana, state's power distribution companies (discoms) have come up with a plan to provide power to consumers in rural areas based on the urban model. The discoms have asked villagers to help in reducing aggregate, technical and commercial (AT&C) losses, and in turn, get up to 20 hours of electricity daily.

"We have offered that if villagers help in reducing AT&C losses in their villagers up to 25 per cent, they will get power for 20 hours a day — provided every household has metered connections and all metres are placed outside the houses," an official said.

Chairman and Managing Director of Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam , Devender Singh, said: "The discoms have offered to give domestic power supply to consumers in villages based on the urban model if they reduce AT&C losses. If they reduce one third of the existing AT&C losses by over 25 per cent, supply to their village will be increased from the current 11 hours a day to 14 hours. With the further one-third reduction, they will get power for 17 hours a day. By reducing losses up to 25 per cent, the village will get electricity for 20 hours a day as is the case in urban areas."

To opt for attractive scheme, villagers have to ensure that each house takes a regular power connection, all metres are relocated outside the houses and all damaged and old mechanical metres are replaced with electronic ones, he added.

"Following request by panchayats, the nigams will organise camps in villages to provide on the spot connections in houses that have no regular connection," said Singh.
