In short, India is in vogue. “Though we talk about cheap costs, foreign production houses have to incur additional expenses, like expensive hotels. But they don’t mind because of the fantastic shooting options that India offers,” says Arti Surendranath of Kailash Picture Company, also the line producer of A Mighty Heart. “For instance, we shot at places like Mohammed Ali Road, on the J J Flyover, at posh Marine Drive, and even inside local trains.” The interest level is so high that films are shot here though they are not set in India, says Miriam Joseph, a freelance executive producer.
Production houses, however, complain about tedious permission-seeking procedures. “The script needs to be cleared by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Besides, one has to obtain permission at various levels, starting from the police to local municipal authorities,” says Surendranath.
