disproportionate assets: BJP demands CM Akhilesh Yadav’s resignation for a ‘fair and uninterrupted inquiry’

Hours after the Supreme Court ruled that the CBI probe into the alleged disproportionate assets of Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav will continue, the BJP on Thursday demanded that Akhilesh should resign for a "fair" and "uninterrupted" inquiry.

Speaking at a press conference, state BJP president Laxmikant Bajpai said that the apex court's order on the review petition proves that prima facie the allegations are serious, though the whole truth will come out only after completion of the inquiry. He, however, said there is no possibility of an impartial and smooth inquiry while Akhilesh holds a constitutional post.

"Will it be possible for the CBI to call a chief minister at their office for interrogation and will he go if called by the CBI?" Bajpai asked, adding that there were several precedents in the country when leaders resigned from constitutional posts to facilitate a free and fair inquiry into allegations against them.

Bajpai said if Akhilesh remains on the post of chief minister, it is very likely that the Congress will use the CBI probe for political goals. He said Akhilesh could, therefore, consider making his wife Dimple Yadav, who has been cleared of the disproportionate assets inquiry, chief minister in his place.

However, Bajpai added that the state government seems to have become deaf to corruption as it was giving plum postings to people facing corruption charges. He said the government has not shifted the Chairman and CEO of Noida, despite the Allahabad High Court order and IAS officer Rajiv Kumar, who was convicted by the CBI court in a case of corruption, has been given a plum posting after he obtained bail.
